What Are Context Clues?
Context clues are hints that authors give us in sentences to help us figure out what a word means. Good readers look at the words around the unknown word to find clues!
✅ Example:
"The dog wagged his tail and barked happily, showing how excited he was to see his owner."
The word "excited" means: very happy and full of energy
Context clues that helped: "wagged his tail" and "barked happily" show the dog is happy!
